Home TV options: learn the basics

Cable and satellite television provides service to users by using the radio frequency signals transmitted to televisions.  This is often done through coaxial or optical fiber cables instead of the usual over-the-air method that normal television antennas receive.  Cable TV is most common in North America, Australia, Europe, and East Asia.

Cable TV programming

Programming is divided between basic and premium programming.  Basic cable networks are added with beginner packages provided by cable television providers, and include advertisements and commercials to help provide funding for their channels.  Premium cable networks are commercial free, but require an additional monthly fee to view.

Other cable uses

The cables used for cable TV can not only carry television signals, they can transmit large amounts of data as well.  Along with providing television channels, the cables can provide the Internet, wireless services, and even be used for the telephone.  Many cable television providers offer these services in a bundle package, and is commonly called triple play.

Issues and fees

In order to use a cable service, a cable network must be installed.  Having the network installed has costs, along with regular maintenance.  Another issue is if there are many providers in a generally small area, there may be more physical cable already installed, leading to an even higher payment.  For these areas, using a satellite provider is usually advised.
